Respite Care Ministry is a daytime socialization program offering engagement, meaningful activities, and supervised care for individuals with early-to-mid stage dementia. It also provides relief and support for their caregivers.
Who can attend Respite?
Respite is for individuals with early to mid stage dementia. Designed as a socialization program, it is supported by trained volunteers and does not offer any medical support.
What are the requirements for participation?
Participants are required to be able to independently eat, toilet, and ambulate (with or without use of assistive devices). In addition, they must be able to self-administer medication.
What is the cost?
The cost of Respite is $30 per four hour session. This includes lunch and snacks. There is a sliding scale fee for those who might be excluded due to fees.
Is transportation provided?
No. Participants and their caregivers are responsible for transportation to and from the program.
Is medical care provided?
No. Staff and volunteers are not licensed to administer medications. Participants must be able to self-administer if necessary. The program is not equipped to handle medical emergencies beyond calling 911.
Can my loved one attend with their caregiver?
Yes. Attendants may accompany participants but must cover their own meal cost.
How do I enroll a loved one?
Contact the program director at c.heiberg@covenantcares.org or 210-722-5640 for a screening interview with the director to ensure the program is the right fit for your loved one. Enrollment is based on ongoing evaluations to ensure continued compatibility with the program.
